Stone walls, the Kuromon gate and the Nagayamon gate keep the look of the past, and you can take a history walk together with the streets of the castle town. Singing sand exists only on clean beaches; there were once about 90 in Japan, now only about 20. The sand here stopped singing from the mid-1960s, but thanks to local clean-ups it began to sing again around 1994, which is said to be rare nationwide. As the key to defending western Japan and a window to the Asian continent, the office was built at the heart of Dazaifu. Foundation stones remain, and it is a national special historic site laid out as a historic park; about 100 cherry trees bloom in spring, and the Dazaifu Exhibition Hall near the entrance introduces the history and culture of Dazaifu.Official check: 26 Sept 2026

Most buildings were lost after the Meiji Restoration, but the stone walls and layout remain almost as they were, and it is a national historic site; surviving buildings include the Tamon-yagura turret (Important Cultural Property). It is said to have begun when, after defeat at the Battle of Baekgang in 663, Emperor Tenji moved Dazaifu for defence and enshrined the myriad gods on Mt. Homan, which lay in the "kimon" (demon gate) direction. The lower shrine is at the foot and the upper shrine on the summit; it is the entrance to the Mt. It was founded by Hosokawa Tadaoki, and from Kan'ei 9 was the seat of the Ogasawara clan for about 230 years until Meiji; it burned in 1866, and the present castle was rebuilt in 1959. No photo yetFukuoka, FukuokaKorokan RuinsThe "Korokan" was a guesthouse for receiving foreign envoys in the Heian period, built in three places - Heian-kyo (Kyoto), Naniwa (Osaka) and Tsukushi (Fukuoka) - and the Tsukushi one in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka, is the only one whose remains have been found. For about 400 years from the late 7th to the 11th century it received envoys to Tang China, Silla missions and merchants. Mojiko, opened as a port in 1889 (Meiji 22), prospered as an international trade port; landmarks include Mojiko Station, the former Moji Mitsui Club and the "Blue Wing Moji" drawbridge looking over the Kanmon Strait, with cafes and restaurants serving local dishes such as yaki-curry.
