Korokan Ruins
The "Korokan" was a guesthouse for receiving foreign envoys in the Heian period, built in three places - Heian-kyo (Kyoto), Naniwa (Osaka) and Tsukushi (Fukuoka) - and the Tsukushi one in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka, is the only one whose remains have been found. For about 400 years from the late 7th to the 11th century it received envoys to Tang China, Silla missions and merchants. Its remains were found in 1987 during work on the Heiwadai Stadium; a lodging has been restored, and the exhibition hall shows excavated items such as Chinese celadon and West Asian glass.
