Kushida Shrine
The oldest guardian shrine of Hakata, affectionately called "O-Kushida-san". It is thought to have been transferred from Kushida Shrine in Matsusaka, Ise, and the present buildings were built when Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt Hakata. It enshrines three deities, and three bells hang in the worship hall. The sacred ginkgo at the entrance, said to be over 1,000 years old, is a prefectural natural monument. The shrine is famous for the summer festival "Hakata Gion Yamakasa" (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage); a 13 m decorated float is on display all year except June, and the "Hakata Okunchi" procession is held in late October.
