Soeda, Fukuoka / 英彦山
Mt. Hiko
A sacred mountain of about 1,200 m with three peaks on the border of Soeda in Fukuoka and Nakatsu in Oita, long revered as holy. It is known as a training ground of the yamabushi's Shugendo and is one of Japan's three great Shugendo mountains (with Haguro and Omine). At its centre is the Hikosan Jingu Hoheiden, a national Important Cultural Property, and in autumn many hikers come for the autumn leaves.
