Nakatsu, Oita / 雲八幡宮
Kumo Hachimangu Shrine
Long ago, a god in the form of a child appeared amid seven-coloured clouds rising from a stone where Empress Jingu had sat, so the place was called "Kumo no Yashiro" (the shrine of clouds); in the Heian period Kumo Hachimangu was built here. The "Kappagaku" music, a prefectural cultural property with over 350 years of history, still sounds at the annual festival, humorous kappa statues are dotted around the grounds, and the chief priest's talks on myth and history are popular.
