Itoshima, Fukuoka / 姉子の浜（鳴き砂）
Aneko Beach (Singing Sand)
A "singing sand" beach where the sand squeaks as you walk. Singing sand exists only on clean beaches; there were once about 90 in Japan, now only about 20. The sand here stopped singing from the mid-1960s, but thanks to local clean-ups it began to sing again around 1994, which is said to be rare nationwide. You can listen to it while looking at the Genkai Sea and the sunset.
