Niji no Matsubara
A pine grove along the beach of Karatsu Bay, a national special place of scenic beauty counted with Miho no Matsubara and Kehi no Matsubara among Japan's three great pine groves. About 1 million black pines grow over about 4.5 km in length and 0.5 km in width. It began in the early 17th century when Terasawa Hirotaka, the first lord of Karatsu, planted black pines on the coastal dunes against wind and tides, and it is known for its "seven wonders" legends.
