Its symbol is a reproduction of the Zwinger Palace, a masterpiece of 18th-century German Baroque architecture, with a Baroque garden beside it. On about 20,000 tsubo, 22 shops deal in everyday tableware, gifts, restaurant ware and fine art ceramics, with galleries, a hotel and restaurants; outlet items and bargains make it feel like a small pottery fair any time. No photo yetKaratsu, SagaCape HadoA small cape jutting out from the Higashi-Matsuura Peninsula, a scenic spot selected as one of Japan's 100 best beaches and part of Genkai Quasi-National Park. The area is a resort for hiking, fishing, camping and swimming, and for the local speciality "sazae no tsuboyaki", freshly caught turban shells are grilled in front of you. No photo yetSaga, SagaFuruyu and Kumanokawa OnsenTwo hot-spring villages along the Kase River in Fuji, Saga City, known for lukewarm water you can soak in at leisure. Furuyu Onsen is said to have been discovered about 2,100 years ago by Xu Fu, sent by the First Emperor of Qin in search of the herb of immortality, and rediscovered in 1791 when villagers saw a crane healing its leg; its quiet, rustic streets attracted artists such as Aoki Shigeru and Saito Mokichi, who stayed three weeks in 1920 and left 38 poems. No photo yetKaratsu, SagaGenkai Underwater Observation TowerOpened on December 1, 1974 (Showa 49) as the only underwater observation tower on the Sea of Japan, connected to Cape Hado by an 86 m pier. The tower is 20 m high and 10 m across; the sea deck looks over the islands of the Genkai Sea on three sides, and from the underwater room 7 m deep, through 24 windows, you can watch about 30 kinds of fish, seaweed and shellfish as they are in nature. Since a renewal on April 1, 2024, projection mapping on the 360-degree ceiling adds a 20-minute show.Official check: 26 Sept 2026
No photo yetKaratsu, SagaHikiyama Exhibition HallA hall displaying all year the 14 hikiyama floats that star in the Karatsu Kunchi festival (November 2-4 every year). The first float, the Red Lion, was dedicated to Karatsu Shrine in 1819 (Bunsei 2); of the 15 made, 14 survive and are a prefectural Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and the festival is part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals". The floats are made of hundreds of layers of washi over clay or wooden moulds, lacquered and gilded, and weigh 2-3 tonnes. Fresh green in spring, and over 10,000 maples coloured in autumn. No photo yetKaratsu, SagaKaratsu CastleThe symbol of Karatsu, completed in 1608 (Keicho 13) by Terasawa Hirotaka, the first lord, over seven years from 1602. It stood on Mitsushimayama, surrounded by sea and river on three sides. Abandoned in 1871, its main-enclosure site became Maizuru Park; the present five-storey keep was completed in 1966 as a cultural and tourist facility. Because the pine groves stretching east and west look like a crane spreading its wings, it is also called "Maizuru Castle". No photo yetKanzaki, SagaKunenanA national place of scenic beauty known for its autumn leaves, originally the villa of the Saga businessman Itami Yataro. Its name comes from being built over nine years from 1900 (Meiji 33) under the guidance of the Jodo Shinshu priest Hotori. The sukiya-style house and a garden borrowing the view of the Tsukushi Plain are planted with azaleas and maples, with native trees and a carpet of moss. Mifune, whose shape is said to resemble a Chinese ship, laid out over about three years by Nabeshima Shigeyoshi, the 28th lord of Takeo, for his villa; it is a nationally registered monument. KagamiA 284 m mountain looking down on the city, the special place of scenic beauty Niji no Matsubara, Karatsu Bay and, beyond, the outline of Iki Island; the winding 4 km road to the top is a popular drive. Sung of in the Man'yoshu, it is linked with the legend of Matsura Sayohime, who waved her scarf from the summit to Otomo no Sadehiko as he sailed for Korea, so it is also called "Hirefuriyama". No photo yetKaratsu, SagaNagoya Castle Museum and RuinsThe national special historic site "Nagoya Castle Ruins and Camp Sites" was the base for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea (1592-1598); within 3 km of the castle over 150 camp sites of daimyo from all over Japan remain. The castle, 170,000 m² and completed in just five months, was then second in size only to Osaka Castle, and a castle town of over 200,000 people grew around it. No photo yetKaratsu, SagaNanatsugama CavesA scenic spot and national natural monument, formed as basalt was eroded by the rough waves of the Genkai Sea: seven caves stand side by side in the deeply cut cliffs, with columnar joints in regular rows. The largest cave is 3 m wide at the mouth and 110 m deep, and when the waves allow, sightseeing boats go inside. No photo yetKaratsu, SagaNiji no MatsubaraA pine grove along the beach of Karatsu Bay, a national special place of scenic beauty counted with Miho no Matsubara and Kehi no Matsubara among Japan's three great pine groves. About 1 million black pines grow over about 4.5 km in length and 0.5 km in width. It began in the early 17th century when Terasawa Hirotaka, the first lord of Karatsu, planted black pines on the coastal dunes against wind and tides, and it is known for its "seven wonders" legends.Official check: 26 Sept 2026

In the Edo period it was the official kiln of the Nabeshima family of the Saga domain, making "Nabeshima" porcelain of the highest quality, kept secret and made regardless of cost; about 30 kilns still carry on the traditional methods. The Nabeshima Domain Kiln Park recreates the checkpoint that guarded the secrets and climbing-kiln sites, and the sound of 14 Imari-ware wind chimes on the "Meotoshi Tower" is one of Japan's 100 best soundscapes.Official check: 26 Sept 2026

Legend says that about 300 years ago (around 1693) a magistrate stranded on an island was rescued by a great fish, and in gratitude he built "Ouo Shrine", named after the fish, with a torii about 200 m out in the sea from the shore. No photo yetTakeo, SagaTakeo Onsen Romon GateTakeo Onsen is an old hot spring recorded in the Hizen no Kuni Fudoki, said to have begun about 1,300 years ago when Empress Jingu struck the ground with the shaft of her spear. Its symbol is the vermilion-lacquered gate reminiscent of the Dragon Palace, designed by Tatsuno Kingo of Karatsu, architect of Tokyo Station, and built in 1915 (Taisho 4). No photo yetKaratsu, SagaTashima ShrineSaid to be the oldest shrine in Hizen, on Kabe Island, enshrining three goddesses to whom the Matsura pirates and Genkai fishermen prayed in danger at sea, known as guardians of the Genkai Sea. It has a torii donated by Minamoto no Yorimitsu, an anchor stone from the Mongol invasions, the "Taiko stone" said to have been used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and a sword by Yoshitsugu of Bitchu (an Important Cultural Property). No photo yetUreshino, SagaTodoroki Falls ParkA three-tiered waterfall 11 m high on the upper Shiota River, about 1 km from Ureshino Onsen towards Nagasaki, named because the sound of falling water is like thunder; the basin covers about 2,500 m². The surrounding park is ideal for a walk after bathing, the Takimi Bridge downstream is the best viewpoint, where cherry blossoms bloom in spring. Its history is long: the Hizen no Kuni Fudoki (713) already records a hot spring here. It prospered in the Edo period as a post town on the Nagasaki Kaido, and Siebold visited in 1826 (Bunsei 9); traditional inns line the streets of this historic spa town. Houses, raised storehouses, over 3,000 jar burials and a mound tomb thought to be a king's were excavated. No photo yetKashima, SagaYutoku Inari ShrineCounted with Fushimi Inari and Kasama Inari among Japan's three great Inari shrines, visited by about 3 million people a year and known locally as "Yutoku-san". Founded in 1687 (Jokyo 4), its main buildings are fully lacquered in vivid vermilion; the main hall stands on a stage 18 m high, taller than Kiyomizu-dera's, reached by about 110 steps with Mt.
