Furuyu and Kumanokawa Onsen
Two hot-spring villages along the Kase River in Fuji, Saga City, known for lukewarm water you can soak in at leisure. Furuyu Onsen is said to have been discovered about 2,100 years ago by Xu Fu, sent by the First Emperor of Qin in search of the herb of immortality, and rediscovered in 1791 when villagers saw a crane healing its leg; its quiet, rustic streets attracted artists such as Aoki Shigeru and Saito Mokichi, who stayed three weeks in 1920 and left 38 poems. Kumanokawa Onsen, a little downstream, is said to have been found by Kukai in 821 and has 16 inns.
