Yoshinogari, Saga / 吉野ヶ里歴史公園
Yoshinogari Historical Park
The site of Japan's largest moated settlement of the Yayoi period, surrounded by a 2.5 km moat and designated a national special historic site. Houses, raised storehouses, over 3,000 jar burials and a mound tomb thought to be a king's were excavated. The park, opened in April 2001, has reconstructed watchtowers (12 m high), pit dwellings and storehouses, an exhibition room of finds, and daily hands-on programmes such as making magatama beads and starting fire.
