Karatsu, Saga / 鏡山
Mt. Kagami
A 284 m mountain looking down on the city, the special place of scenic beauty Niji no Matsubara, Karatsu Bay and, beyond, the outline of Iki Island; the winding 4 km road to the top is a popular drive. Sung of in the Man'yoshu, it is linked with the legend of Matsura Sayohime, who waved her scarf from the summit to Otomo no Sadehiko as he sailed for Korea, so it is also called "Hirefuriyama". The summit has an observatory, a rest area and lawns, with cherry blossoms and azaleas.
