Hikiyama Exhibition Hall
A hall displaying all year the 14 hikiyama floats that star in the Karatsu Kunchi festival (November 2-4 every year). The first float, the Red Lion, was dedicated to Karatsu Shrine in 1819 (Bunsei 2); of the 15 made, 14 survive and are a prefectural Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and the festival is part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals". The floats are made of hundreds of layers of washi over clay or wooden moulds, lacquered and gilded, and weigh 2-3 tonnes. The hall has moved temporarily to the Alpino site while it is rebuilt.
