Karatsu, Saga / 唐津城
Karatsu Castle
The symbol of Karatsu, completed in 1608 (Keicho 13) by Terasawa Hirotaka, the first lord, over seven years from 1602. It stood on Mitsushimayama, surrounded by sea and river on three sides. Abandoned in 1871, its main-enclosure site became Maizuru Park; the present five-storey keep was completed in 1966 as a cultural and tourist facility. Because the pine groves stretching east and west look like a crane spreading its wings, it is also called "Maizuru Castle". The 5th floor is an observation floor over the Genkai Sea.
