Karatsu, Saga / 田島神社
Tashima Shrine
Said to be the oldest shrine in Hizen, on Kabe Island, enshrining three goddesses to whom the Matsura pirates and Genkai fishermen prayed in danger at sea, known as guardians of the Genkai Sea. It has a torii donated by Minamoto no Yorimitsu, an anchor stone from the Mongol invasions, the "Taiko stone" said to have been used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and a sword by Yoshitsugu of Bitchu (an Important Cultural Property). Sayohime Shrine, linked to the legend of Matsura Sayohime, holds the "Bofuseki" stone.
