Dazaifu, Fukuoka / 太宰府天満宮
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
The shrine enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning, and called the head of about 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan. The vermilion main hall is surrounded by gardens, with buildings such as the treasure hall and the Kanko History Museum; the sacred plum tree "Tobiume", said in legend to have flown overnight from the capital to Dazaifu, is famous, and about 6,000 white and red plum trees of about 200 kinds grow in the grounds.
