Sasaguri, Fukuoka / 南蔵院

Nanzoin Temple

The head temple of the Sasaguri Shikoku pilgrimage and its first stop, and a special head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism. Its reclining Buddha, built in 1995, is 41 m long, 11 m high and weighs 300 tonnes, one of the largest bronze statues in the world; inside are a chamber with relics of the Buddha and "sand stepping" for the 88 Shikoku temples (entry inside is paid). The temple asks visitors to remember it is a place of prayer, not a tourist site, and lists prohibited behaviour.

Admission

Since May 7, 2025 foreign visitors pay an entry fee: 300 yen per person, 200 yen per person for groups of 10 or more (18 and under free); Japanese nationals and holders of Japanese residence permits (must be shown) are free; groups of 10 or more must book in advance (from one month before until the morning of the previous day); entry inside the reclining Buddha 500 yen (prayer offering).
