The Manyo poet Otomo no Yakamochi loved this scenery and wrote many poems about it. The "Yoshitsune-iwa" rock, where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have waited for a shower to clear, is said to be the origin of the name Amaharashi. The Nakajima Lock, a Panama-canal-style lock that adjusts the water level with two pairs of gates, is a national Important Cultural Property; you can experience its 2.5 m "water elevator". From the observation towers at both ends of the Tenmon Bridge, the park's symbol, you can see the whole park and the Tateyama mountains. There are walking paths around the canal, a bird sanctuary and the "Fugan Suijo Line" cruise, plus a Starbucks said to be "the most beautiful in the world". The thatched gassho-style houses are a very rare type found in Japan only in this area; 20 remain in Ainokura, including the "primitive gassho", the only surviving prototype in Gokayama, and a thatched temple. It is 9.12 m across; the share of water for each channel is set by the length of the cylinder's circumference. Such a large drop of overflowing water is rare, and it is described online as "Japan's most beautiful" cylindrical water divider. Omachi-dori, lined with storehouses and shipping merchants' houses, is ideal for strolling, and many houses from the Meiji period remain. Recently galleries in renovated storehouses, food shops, a beer pub, a sake bar and restaurants have opened. Famous as the tallest dam in Japan at 186 m, it took 7 years, 51.3 billion yen and 10 million workers in total. Washiba (2,924 m) in the Northern Alps, is one of Japan's fastest rivers and has carved what is said to be Japan's deepest V-shaped gorge. The torokko train runs about 20 km from Unazuki to Keyakidaira at an average of 16 km/h, about 80 minutes one way, on 762 mm narrow-gauge track; its oldest carriages date from 1923. From open carriages or cars with windows you pass the crimson Komen Bridge over Lake Unazuki, the 60 m-high Atobiki Bridge and the autumn-leaf spot Kinshukan. It is covered in deep snow until June in most years, but from July to October its deep blue surface reflects the great mountains. Besides the usual early-morning auction, an afternoon auction starts at 12:30, and with advance booking you can watch it from a visitors' gallery on the 2nd floor, seeing the lively exchanges between auctioneers and buyers up close. On clear days you can see the Sea of Japan, the Tateyama mountains and the Noto Peninsula. In spring snowmelt from the Tateyama mountains adds the "Hannoki Falls" on its right, so two falls tumble side by side; from spring to summer spray rises from the basin, and in autumn the gorge turns red and yellow. The Shomyo-daira rest house near the car park explains the falls with models and videos. It was completed over 26 years from 1907 using the best local bronze-casting skills, and is one of the three great Buddhas of Etchu. It is said to have begun about 800 years ago as a wooden Buddha, and was rebuilt many times. For its fine workmanship it is called "the most handsome in Japan". You change between vehicles from Tateyama Station in Toyama to Ogizawa Station in Nagano, passing scenic spots such as Mikurigaike, the Tateyama Ropeway (Japan's longest single-span ropeway with no supporting pillars) and Kurobe Dam. Its grand layout shows the wealth of the 1.2-million-koku Kaga domain.
