Takaoka Daibutsu (Great Buddha)
A bronze seated Amida Buddha 16 m high at Daibutsuji Temple, the symbol of Takaoka, Japan's top producer of copperware. It was completed over 26 years from 1907 using the best local bronze-casting skills, and is one of the three great Buddhas of Etchu. It is said to have begun about 800 years ago as a wooden Buddha, and was rebuilt many times. For its fine workmanship it is called "the most handsome in Japan". Inside the pedestal, a corridor holds 13 Buddhist paintings and the face said to remain from the second Buddha, burned in the great fire of 1900.
