Kurobe Gorge Railway (Torokko Train)

The Kurobe River, rising on Mt. Washiba (2,924 m) in the Northern Alps, is one of Japan's fastest rivers and has carved what is said to be Japan's deepest V-shaped gorge. The torokko train runs about 20 km from Unazuki to Keyakidaira at an average of 16 km/h, about 80 minutes one way, on 762 mm narrow-gauge track; its oldest carriages date from 1923. From open carriages or cars with windows you pass the crimson Komen Bridge over Lake Unazuki, the 60 m-high Atobiki Bridge and the autumn-leaf spot Kinshukan. In 2026 it runs Unazuki-Nekomata until September 30 and the whole line to Keyakidaira from October 1.
