Iwase Old Port Town
An area where a nostalgic old townscape remains, a port town that prospered from the early Edo period with the Kitamaebune ships sailing the Sea of Japan. Omachi-dori, lined with storehouses and shipping merchants' houses, is ideal for strolling, and many houses from the Meiji period remain. Recently galleries in renovated storehouses, food shops, a beer pub, a sake bar and restaurants have opened. Iwase is a home of white shrimp fishing, and there are shops serving white shrimp dishes.
