Gokayama Ainokura Gassho-style Village
A World Heritage village where gassho-style houses about 100 to 350 years old stand, keeping the historic landscape of Gokayama. The thatched gassho-style houses are a very rare type found in Japan only in this area; 20 remain in Ainokura, including the "primitive gassho", the only surviving prototype in Gokayama, and a thatched temple. People still live in the village. The Ainokura Folk Museum, the Traditional Industry Hall and a washi-making workshop show village life and papermaking.
