Its exposed-concrete exterior recalls traditional wooden architecture, and the pilotis and glass lobby open to citizens became a model for post-war government buildings; the mural on the 1st floor is by Inokuma Genichiro. As faith in Konpira spread nationwide and the town in front of the shrine grew, a permanent theatre was needed; the name "Kanamaruza" dates from 1900 (Meiji 33). The view from the ropeway, passing between strange rocks carved by wind and rain and sheer rock walls, is a highlight, with fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, autumn leaves and snow in winter. In Konin 12 (821) Kobo Daishi Kukai repaired it using Tang engineering, completing in a short time Japan's first arch-dam-style embankment. With green Mt. Shiun as its backdrop, six ponds and thirteen artificial hills are skilfully arranged in an early-Edo stroll garden; about 1,000 of its roughly 1,400 pines are carefully trained. The set used for the live-action "Kiki's Delivery Service" now operates as a variety shop; there are an Olive Memorial Hall, a Greek windmill, the natural hot spring "Sun Olive Onsen" and a herb greenhouse with craft experiences (reservation required).
