Mitoyo, Kagawa / 粟島
Awashima Island
An island where three islets are joined by sandbars into a screw shape. Once a port of call for Kitamae ships, it had the national Awashima Seamen's School from 1897 (Meiji 30), whose building is now the memorial hall of Awashima Ocean Memorial Park. From the Shiro-no-yama observatory you get a 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea, including the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and the "Awashima Momote Festival" (a prefectural intangible folk cultural property) is held on the first Sunday of March.
