Takamatsu, Kagawa / 香川県庁舎（東館）
Kagawa Prefectural Government Office East Building
An early masterpiece by Kenzo Tange, the first Japanese winner of the Pritzker Prize, regarded as one of the most important works in architectural history for fusing Japanese tradition with modernism. Its exposed-concrete exterior recalls traditional wooden architecture, and the pilotis and glass lobby open to citizens became a model for post-war government buildings; the mural on the 1st floor is by Inokuma Genichiro. It was the only Japanese building in the New York Times T Magazine's "25 most important postwar buildings" (2021).
