Takamatsu, Kagawa / 屋島（山上）
Yashima Plateau
A roof-shaped lava plateau known as a battlefield of the Genpei War, with a view over the Seto Inland Sea, the city of Takamatsu and the many islands. Around Dannoura below, where the battle was fought about 800 years ago, remain sites such as "Funakakushi", where the Heike hid their warships, and "Inori-iwa", where Nasu no Yoichi prayed his arrow would hit the fan. On top are Yashima-ji, temple 84 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, and the New Yashima Aquarium, rare as a mountaintop aquarium.
