Takamatsu, Kagawa / 特別名勝 栗林公園
Ritsurin Garden
The largest of the gardens designated national special places of scenic beauty, completed nearly 300 years ago as a villa of the Matsudaira lords of Takamatsu. With green Mt. Shiun as its backdrop, six ponds and thirteen artificial hills are skilfully arranged in an early-Edo stroll garden; about 1,000 of its roughly 1,400 pines are carefully trained. It opened to the public as a prefectural park in 1875 (Meiji 8), and its changing views are described as "a new scene at every step".
