Kotohira, Kagawa / 金刀比羅宮
Kotohira-gu Shrine (Konpira-san)
Long loved as "Konpira-san", the god of the sea, famous for the long stone steps of its approach: 785 steps to the main shrine and 1,368 to the inner shrine. Along the steps are the Omon gate, the "five farmers" and the Shoin (an Important Cultural Property); the grounds have historic buildings such as the Asahi-sha (Important Cultural Property), and the treasure hall shows art and cultural properties. Souvenir and udon shops line both sides of the approach.
