Manno, Kagawa / 満濃池
Mannoike Reservoir
One of the largest irrigation reservoirs in Japan, said to have been first built in the Taiho era (701-704). In Konin 12 (821) Kobo Daishi Kukai repaired it using Tang engineering, completing in a short time Japan's first arch-dam-style embankment. After further repairs and raising, it now holds 15.4 million tonnes and spreads like a sea as "the water jar of Sanuki".
