Kanamaruza (Old Konpira Grand Theatre)
Japan's oldest surviving kabuki theatre, built in 1835 (Tenpo 6). As faith in Konpira spread nationwide and the town in front of the shrine grew, a permanent theatre was needed; the name "Kanamaruza" dates from 1900 (Meiji 33). It became an Important Cultural Property in 1970, was moved and restored over four years from 1972, and since 1985 the "Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Theatre" has heralded spring in Shikoku.
