No photo yetKochi, KochiGodaisan Observation TerraceAn observation terrace near the top of Godaisan, about 20 minutes by car from central Kochi, a mountain known for Chikurin-ji (temple 31 of the Shikoku 88) and the Makino Botanical Garden. It looks over Kochi City, Urado Bay and Kochi Port, and is also a little-known spot for the night view of the city. It is said to have begun in the early Edo period as a private temporary bridge built by two Tosa domain merchants, Harimaya Sotoku and Hitsuya Dosei, to go between their houses. Where the Kuroshio Current meets the Bungo Channel, a third of Japan's fish species are said to live, making it one of the world's best places for diving and snorkelling; even in the shallows you can see corals and tropical fish. The keep, 18.5 m high with three roofs and six floors, is one of the 12 original surviving keeps, and this is the only castle among them where the main-enclosure palace also survives. Across about 8 ha, over 3,000 kinds of plants through the seasons can be seen, including plants of southwestern Japan and ones associated with Dr. Makino. After a great fire in the Taisho era, funds for rebuilding were sent by Emperor Taisho, so the street was renamed Taishomachi and the market has been called Taishomachi Market ever since. About 100,000 plants grow over about 30,000 m², including the "Water Garden" with a lily pond and green arched bridge. It is the only garden in the world allowed by the foundation that manages Monet's garden in Giverny to use the name "Monet's Garden", and experts from the original garden visit regularly to advise on its care. Its blue changes from emerald green to deep cobalt with the sunlight, season, weather and water level. Yayoi-period pottery and stone tools, including an ancient "pot of the gods", were found near the exit. Designed to go under water in floods so that it is not washed away, it has no railings, giving a unique feeling of being one with the water. It is 5.3 m tall, 13.5 m including the pedestal, and was built in the early Showa era with funds raised by young volunteers of Kochi. Irazu in Tsuno and flowing through Nakatosa, Shimanto Town and Shimanto City, known as "the last clear stream". Traditional fishing such as "hiburi" (fire) fishing and "shibazuke" fishing is still practised. About 300 stalls line about 1 km of Otesuji, the avenue leading to Kochi Castle, selling fresh local vegetables and fruit, handmade inaka-zushi (country sushi), imo-ten (sweet-potato tempura) and other Kochi specialities. At the tip of Cape Chihiro is "Minokoshi", strange rocks said to be so named because even Kobo Daishi left them unseen, the place being so hard to reach. After a UFO appeared in a photo taken by a climber on the road and was widely reported in the local paper, it became known as the "UFO Line".
