Tosashimizu, Kochi / ジョン万次郎資料館

John Manjiro Museum

Manjiro, born in the Edo period as the second son of a poor fisherman in Nakanohama, Tosashimizu, was cast adrift at 14 while fishing with friends, rescued by an American ship and taken to America. There he learned English, navigation and shipbuilding, and after returning he worked for the modernisation of Japan. The museum lets you experience his eventful life through materials and dioramas.

Getting there: By car about 1 hour 40 minutes from Shimanto-cho Chuo IC (Kochi Expressway); by bus from Nakamura Station (Tosa Kuroshio Railway), Kochi Seinan Kotsu bus for Ashizuri-misaki to Shimizu Plaza Pal-mae, change to the bus for Sukumo to Yoro, then about 7 minutes on foot.
