Shimanto, Kochi / 四万十川
Shimanto River
The longest river in Shikoku (196 km), rising on Mt. Irazu in Tsuno and flowing through Nakatosa, Shimanto Town and Shimanto City, known as "the last clear stream". Traditional fishing such as "hiburi" (fire) fishing and "shibazuke" fishing is still practised. The many "chinkabashi" submersible bridges from upstream to downstream, built without railings to sink below the water in floods, are still used as local roads and are part of the river's scenery.
