Shimanto, Kochi / 佐田沈下橋
Sada Chinkabashi (Submersible Bridge)
The lowest and longest of the many "chinkabashi" (submersible bridges) across the Shimanto River, blending into the great river and its nature. Designed to go under water in floods so that it is not washed away, it has no railings, giving a unique feeling of being one with the water. It is still used as a local road, and from the bridge you can look over the wide Shimanto and the countryside (satoyama).
