Kochi, Kochi / 高知城（天守・懐徳館）
Kochi Castle
Fifteen of its buildings, including the keep, the main-enclosure palace ("Kaitokukan") and the Otemon gate, are national Important Cultural Properties. The keep, 18.5 m high with three roofs and six floors, is one of the 12 original surviving keeps, and this is the only castle among them where the main-enclosure palace also survives. Built in 1603 by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, first lord of Tosa, it was once lost in a great fire in the castle town and rebuilt in 1749.
