Kashiwajima Island
An island at the tip of Otsuki, known as "the island where boats seem to float in the air" for its emerald-green, remarkably clear sea. Where the Kuroshio Current meets the Bungo Channel, a third of Japan's fish species are said to live, making it one of the world's best places for diving and snorkelling; even in the shallows you can see corals and tropical fish. In summer the beaches and campsite are busy, and the island has a nostalgic townscape.
