The "Meoto Iwa" (wedded rocks) seen in front are regarded as a torii for worshipping the sacred "Okitama Shinseki" rock, about 700 m offshore, and the sun. By old custom, pilgrims purified themselves in the sea at Futamiura before visiting the Jingu ("Hama-sangu"), and many still visit this shrine first. The coast west of the river mouth, known since ancient times as the "seven villages of Futami", has supplied sacred salt to the Jingu. Trails from the pass lead up Mt. Tengukura and Mt. Binshi, and Magose Park below is a cherry-blossom spot. The small fields overlap so tightly that "one was thought missing but was hidden under a hat" - there are about 1,340 of them. At the pass, surrounded by bamboo, stands a jizo said to have been shot with a gun, and from the plum grove on the way you can see the Shichiri-mihama coast. It is a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument, and part of the World Heritage "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range". He moved here from his birthplace at the age of 12 and devoted himself to study all his life; it is a national special historic site.
