Kumano, Mie / 丸山千枚田
Maruyama Senmaida Rice Terraces
Many small rice paddies in the Maruyama district of Kumano, called "senmaida" (a thousand fields) and said to be the finest terraced-field landscape in Japan. The small fields overlap so tightly that "one was thought missing but was hidden under a hat" - there are about 1,340 of them. Events such as rice-growing experiences are held all year, and local people carry out conservation.
