Mikimoto Pearl Island
A green island in Toba Bay where Mikimoto Kokichi succeeded in cultivating pearls for the first time in the world in 1893 (Meiji 26); it opened to visitors in 1951. The island of about 7,000 tsubo has the Pearl Museum, the Kokichi Mikimoto Memorial Hall on the life of the "Pearl King", and a shop and restaurant, and you can watch ama divers in traditional white diving clothes demonstrate diving.
