The "hometown skills" area recreates late-Edo to early-Meiji merchant houses, samurai residences and farmhouses, with candle-making, papier-mache painting and vegetable picking. From the 360-degree rooftop deck 90 m above sea level, the horizon is famous for looking curved at both ends; you can see the Kashima coast, Mt. No photo yetKatori, ChibaFormer Residence of Ino TadatakaIno Tadataka, who walked and surveyed all of Japan in the Edo period and completed the first map of Japan based on actual surveys, spent over 30 years, from age 17 to 49, in Sawara. The Ino family was one of Sawara's leading merchant houses, mainly brewing; the shop faces the Ono River, with the kitchen, shoin main house and storehouse behind. Its 500 m corridor-style galleries on one floor above ground and two below always show about 120 fine realist works by about 60 contemporary artists, including Japan's largest collection of Morimoto Sosuke. Designed by the British engineer Brunton and completed in 1874, it was the first structure built of Japanese-made bricks and became a national Important Cultural Property in 2020. One of the "100 Lighthouses of the World", it is one of the few lighthouses you can climb: 99 spiral steps lead to the lamp level with views over the Pacific. Besides performances by orcas, belugas, dolphins and sea lions, exhibits recreating natural environments show about 11,000 river and sea animals of about 800 species. Built in 1028 at the wish of Emperor Go-Ichijo, it is known as the only "shiho-kakezukuri" (suspended on all four sides) hall in Japan and is an Important Cultural Property. The corridor reached by wooden stairs seems to float in the air, with views of the South Boso mountains and the Kasamori temple forest, a Natural Monument, below. No photo yetKatori, ChibaKatori Jingu ShrineKnown with Kashima Jingu in Ibaraki as "Kashima-sama, Katori-sama", the head shrine of about 400 Katori shrines, mainly in Kanto. It is said to have been founded in 678 BC, and enshrines Futsunushi-no-Okami from the Nihon Shoki. As Ichinomiya of Shimousa, it was one of only three shrines, with Ise and Kashima, to hold the title "Jingu" before the Meiji period. The vermilion two-storey gate, an Important Cultural Property, bears a plaque written by Togo Heihachiro, and the shrine owns the National Treasure kaiju budo mirror. No photo yetKatori, ChibaKoedo Sawara Boat TourA boat tour to gently view Sawara's townscape, an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings where the Edo atmosphere remains. The "koedo" scenery seen from the Ono River differs from what you see on foot; the ride takes about 30 minutes and the boatman's guide is one of the highlights. The landing, a "dashi" loading dock, is in front of the former residence of Ino Tadataka, next to the Toyohashi bridge, whose water falls every 30 minutes. Watarijima is a small island with a red torii about 170 m offshore; about 20 times a year at low tide, a sandbar links it to the beach. Nokogiri in Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park was a source of fine "Boshu stone" from the Muromachi period; quarrying ended in 1982, and the vertical quarry walls, together with "Jigoku Nozoki" in Nihonji Temple, are now scenic spots. The ropeway goes up to the summit station observatory, with a 360-degree view; on clear days you can see Tokyo Skytree across Futtsu Cape. The view of Mt. Fuji from Mt. You can see planes taking off and landing up close and feel the sound of their jet engines. About 500 cherry trees bloom with the planes in spring, one of Chiba's 100 best views, crowded in late March to early April. There are three ponds, Monju, Ryuju and Ryuchi, and the floating pavilion on Ryuchi pond is a good photo spot. No photo yetNarita, ChibaNaritasan Shinshoji TempleKnown as "O-Fudo-sama of Narita", one of the three great Fudo temples of Kanto and popular with visitors from abroad; about 3 million people come in the first three days of the New Year and about 10 million a year. It is the head temple of the Shingon Chisan sect. Its principal image, a Fudo Myoo carved by Kobo Daishi, was brought from Kyoto by the priest Kancho to quell the Taira no Masakado rebellion, and the temple was founded in 940. Founded as a research institution in 1981, it opened to the public in 1983. Using real materials, precise replicas and scholarly reconstructed models, it presents history from prehistory to the present and the folk culture of the archipelago. Nokogiri (329 m), whose jagged ridge looks like the teeth of a saw, is a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty; Nihonji Temple stands on its southern slope. Founded in 725 by the monk Gyoki at the command of Emperor Shomu, it is the oldest imperial temple in Kanto. Its vast grounds hold Japan's largest rock-carved Buddha, the Hyakushaku Kannon and the 1,500 arhat statues. At the summit, "Jigoku Nozoki" (peek into hell) is a rock jutting into the air, with views of the Boso Peninsula and, in the distance, Mt. Fuji and the Miura Peninsula.Official check: 26 Sept 2026
No photo yetKimitsu, ChibaNomizo Falls and Kameiwa Cave (Shimizu Keiryu Hiroba)A riverside park on the upper Sasa River in the interior of the Boso Peninsula, with fresh green, fireflies at their best in late June, and some of the latest autumn colours on Honshu. Light shining through the cave reflects on the water to form a heart shape, which became a talking point on social media; the clearest heart is said to appear early in the morning (from about 6:30, for about an hour) around the spring and autumn equinoxes. No photo yetMinamiboso, ChibaOkamoto Pier (Haraoka Pier)One of the few wooden sea piers in Japan, between Haraoka and Tatara-Kitahama beaches. Built for fishing in 1921, its nostalgic Showa-retro look is its charm. From the pier jutting into Tomiura Bay you can see across to the Miura Peninsula and Izu, and on fine days Mt. No photo yetSakae, ChibaRyukakuji TempleA temple on the plateau between the Tone River and Lake Inba, said by temple tradition to have been founded in 709 when a dragon appeared; it is one of the oldest temples in the Kanto region. Its principal image, a seated Yakushi Nyorai of the Hakuho period, is an Important Cultural Property. A three-storey pagoda about 33 m high is thought to have stood here, and its site remains, with a foundation stone about 2.4 m across. Sakura has had historical and cultural exchange with the Netherlands since the Edo period, and a genuine Dutch windmill stands as a symbol of friendship. Rape blossoms, snapdragons, calendulas and stocks are grown outdoors, and from early January to mid-March, when many flowers bloom, you can pick flowers. No photo yetOtaki, ChibaYoro ValleyA valley formed by the Yoro River, running from Awamata in Otaki to Asoubara in Ichihara, near the centre of the Boso Peninsula, where rich nature, scattered waterfalls and the largest hot spring area in Boso remain. Fresh green is beautiful from spring to summer, and "Awamata Falls" in autumn leaves is the finest view in the valley.
