Nihonji Temple on Mt. Nokogiri (Jigoku Nozoki)
Mt. Nokogiri (329 m), whose jagged ridge looks like the teeth of a saw, is a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty; Nihonji Temple stands on its southern slope. Founded in 725 by the monk Gyoki at the command of Emperor Shomu, it is the oldest imperial temple in Kanto. Its vast grounds hold Japan's largest rock-carved Buddha, the Hyakushaku Kannon and the 1,500 arhat statues. At the summit, "Jigoku Nozoki" (peek into hell) is a rock jutting into the air, with views of the Boso Peninsula and, in the distance, Mt. Fuji and the Miura Peninsula.
