Chonan, Chiba / 笠森観音（笠森寺観音堂）
Kasamori Kannon (Kasamoriji Temple)
A hall standing on a huge rock at the summit, held up by dozens of pillars. Built in 1028 at the wish of Emperor Go-Ichijo, it is known as the only "shiho-kakezukuri" (suspended on all four sides) hall in Japan and is an Important Cultural Property. The corridor reached by wooden stairs seems to float in the air, with views of the South Boso mountains and the Kasamori temple forest, a Natural Monument, below. It is the 31st temple of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage.
