Sakae, Chiba / 龍角寺
Ryukakuji Temple
A temple on the plateau between the Tone River and Lake Inba, said by temple tradition to have been founded in 709 when a dragon appeared; it is one of the oldest temples in the Kanto region. Its principal image, a seated Yakushi Nyorai of the Hakuho period, is an Important Cultural Property. A three-storey pagoda about 33 m high is thought to have stood here, and its site remains, with a foundation stone about 2.4 m across. Volunteer guides give explanations every Saturday and Sunday.
