Choshi, Chiba / 犬吠埼灯台
Inubosaki Lighthouse
A white lighthouse at the tip of Inubosaki, the easternmost point of the Choshi peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Designed by the British engineer Brunton and completed in 1874, it was the first structure built of Japanese-made bricks and became a national Important Cultural Property in 2020. One of the "100 Lighthouses of the World", it is one of the few lighthouses you can climb: 99 spiral steps lead to the lamp level with views over the Pacific. Apart from mountaintops and remote islands, Inubosaki sees Japan's earliest New Year sunrise.
