It served as a stopping place for members of the imperial family and a social venue for prominent people. It links the Honkan and Dogo Onsen Station, and in true spa-town style you can stroll in a yukata. Three times a day the drum in the red-glazed Shinrokaku turret on the roof sounds the hour. A viewing corridor shows the process from dissolving imported sun-dried sea salt in Japanese seawater and removing impurities to drying and packing, and the entrance has the "Hakata no Shio chime" that plays the melody from the TV advertisement. No photo yetImabari, EhimeIkiki no Gomon (Living Tree Gate)A camphor tree on the approach to the inner sanctuary of Oyamazumi Shrine, said to be about 3,000 years old with a root girth of about 30 m and a prefectural natural monument. People treated the natural hollow at the base of its trunk as a gate and passed through it to worship at the inner sanctuary, hence the name "Ikiki no Gomon" (gate of the living tree). The island has a beach, a campsite and Kashima Shrine associated with the Kono navy; paths run along the shore and up to the summit observatory, which looks over the Hiuchi Sea. Kiro at the southern tip of Oshima, said to have the best view on the Shimanami Kaido; on clear days you can see as far as Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan, as well as the sunset over the sea and, on set days, the illuminated Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge. The observatory, designed by the architect Kengo Kuma, is set into the ground with trees planted on top so that it cannot be seen from outside. "The Kurushima Strait from the top of Mt. No photo yetMatsuyama, EhimeMatsuyama CastleA castle whose construction began in 1602 and took about a quarter of a century, one of the 12 castles with an original keep built before the end of the Edo period. It is a hilltop castle with the main enclosure on the summit and the second and third enclosures at the foot; the top floor of the keep looks over the Matsuyama Plain and the Seto Inland Sea. The "nobori-ishigaki" climbing stone walls from the second to the main enclosure, a defence method of Japanese castles in Korea, survive almost intact on the south side (230 m, the largest in Japan). There are many shops for Ehime food and souvenirs, such as Uwajima's "tai-meshi" (sea bream rice) and Imabari Towel, and the tap that pours out mandarin juice is well received by visitors. The river is so clear that you can see the bottom from the walking paths. There are two paths: the main-stream route with many sights such as Goshiki-gawara, Momiji-kogen and Toragataki falls, and the quiet Teppo route along the Teppo River. In the centre of the grounds stands a sacred camphor tree about 2,600 years old, about 20 m high and 12 m around. The large grounds have free play equipment such as an artificial-turf sledging slope and net trampolines, as well as a bobsleigh ride; the observatory at about 80 m looks over Sakurai Beach, about 8 km long and one of Japan's 100 best beaches. Here karst plateaus at 1,000-1,485 m continue for about 25 km, including Mehikarinaru and Onogahara, making a superb scenic drive. No photo yetNiihama, EhimeTonaru (Besshi Copper Mine Ruins)Industrial heritage of the Besshi Copper Mine, remaining deep in the mountains of Niihama. Once a busy town where many people lived, only ruins were left after the mine closed; the stone and brick structures on the heights have come to be called "the Machu Picchu of the East". From about 750 m you can see Niihama and the Seto Inland Sea on clear days.
