Imabari, Ehime / 大山祇神社
Oyamazumi Shrine
Said to be the oldest shrine in Ehime and the head shrine of over 10,000 Yamazumi and Mishima shrines across Japan, worshipped as a god of the sea, the mountains and warriors. In the centre of the grounds stands a sacred camphor tree about 2,600 years old, about 20 m high and 12 m around. The treasure hall displays arms and armour offered by many warriors, such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Yoritomo, and is said to hold about 80% of Japan's arms and armour designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.
