Imabari, Ehime / 生樹の御門
Ikiki no Gomon (Living Tree Gate)
A camphor tree on the approach to the inner sanctuary of Oyamazumi Shrine, said to be about 3,000 years old with a root girth of about 30 m and a prefectural natural monument. People treated the natural hollow at the base of its trunk as a gate and passed through it to worship at the inner sanctuary, hence the name "Ikiki no Gomon" (gate of the living tree). The inner sanctuary belonged to the shrine's former temple until the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji era.
