Matsuyama, Ehime / 道後温泉本館
Dogo Onsen Honkan
Said to be Japan's oldest hot spring, appearing in the Kojiki and the Man'yoshu; the castle-style three-storey wooden main building is a national Important Cultural Property as a whole and appears in many works such as "Botchan". Three times a day the drum in the red-glazed Shinrokaku turret on the roof sounds the hour. The "Kami no Yu" bath is the model for the one Botchan swam in, and "Yushinden" (1899) is Japan's only bath built for the imperial family, open for viewing.
