Kamiamakusa, Kumamoto / 湯島（談合島）

Yushima Island (Dangojima)

A small island about 4 km around in the middle of the Ariake Sea, between the Amakusa Islands and the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki, about 25 minutes by regular boat from Ebito port in Kamiamakusa. It is also called "Dangojima" (conference island) because people of Shimabara and Amakusa gathered here to plan strategy in the early Edo-period Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion, famous for Amakusa Shiro. With many cats, it has lately become known as a "cat island". The regular boat between Ebito and Yushima runs 5 round trips a day.

Getting there

By bus: rapid bus about 90 minutes from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal or Kumamoto Station to Sanpaaru, about 10 minutes on foot, then about 25 minutes by boat from Ebito port; by car about 80 minutes from Kumamoto City to Ebito port, then about 25 minutes by boat; the regular boat runs 5 round trips a day.
