Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hells)
The "hells" of Unzen Onsen, its best-known sight, where the smell of sulphur hangs in the air and steam and heat blow out from underground. Made up of about 30 hells such as Daikyokan Jigoku, Oito Jigoku and Seishichi Jigoku, it is also known as a place of Christian martyrdom, with a memorial. Renewed in autumn 2016, it has a walking trail of about 60 minutes, with a foot-steaming rest spot and a workshop selling onsen eggs steamed in the hell's vapour.
