Shimabara Samurai Houses
West of Shimabara Castle about 700 houses of low-ranking samurai once lined the streets; as the home of the gun corps, the area was also called Teppo-machi. Only the townscape of Shimo-no-cho is preserved as it was, as the "Samurai Residence Townscape Preservation District"; it is 406.8 m long, and three houses (Yamamoto, Shinozuka and Torita) are open free of charge.
